When can I hear what God wants to tell me?

The daily prayer today asks God:

"Open our ear that we hear and understand what you want to tell us..."
... to hear what God says, what he wants to tell me ... of course, for that I need an open ear ... and I can ask God to help me. But what else can I do? What can I do myself to become a careful listener? The answer seems so simple. But it takes time to learn it: to get quiet, to look for the silence ... yes, God is in the silence. There we can meet Him. There we will hear Him.
It is my experience which corresponds what once the Danish philosopher Sören Kiekegaard described:
to pray doesn't mean to talk to God - it can mean that - but when you want to hear Him then you have to stop talking. Get quiet. Get silent. And wait until you will hear God.
You can be sure that you will hear Him!

I try to translate one of the thoughts of Sören Kiekegaard into English:
"So it is: to pray does not mean to hear oneself talking. To pray means to get silent, to be silent and to wait till the prayer hears God."
